Transcription Tips

  • Start with the ending note — often the most memorable part of a melody
  • Identify the key — listen for the tonal center before writing notes
  • Note the rhythm first — tap out the rhythm before worrying about pitches
  • Sing along — matching pitches vocally helps identify intervals
  • Practice regularly — even 10 minutes a day builds skills quickly

Difficulty Levels

Beginner

Short 4-8 note melodies in C major. Quarter and half notes only. Stepwise motion (no large intervals).

Intermediate

8-16 note melodies with some leaps. Introduction of eighth notes. Occasional chromatic alterations.

Advanced

Longer melodies with syncopation, triplets, and modulations. All major and minor keys.
